27/01/08 - First of the New Year

RGAllanPhotography and EternitysEnd posted this on their journals and, like Matt, I probably wont reach the full 10 but here we go :)

-------------------------
The first ten people who reply to this journal and tell me that they want a slot will have me go through their gallery and pick three deviations, which in turn will be featured in this journal.

The catch is that to qualify, you must post a similar journal. This gives us an opportunity to really appreciate and support this artistic global community we've got going on here.

---------

That's the idea, and the ten slots are open as of now.

I apologise for the recent lack of submissions. I have been taking a lot of photos for the Manchester Phoenix and unfortunately am not allowed to submit them to anywhere other than the club. If I've done a decent enough job, they'll be printed and put with all the other available prints being sold by the club. I am quite proud of some of them, but I have a long way to go before I'm at the standard of some of the other photographers.

I'm getting used to my new camera nicely, tho there are a few kinks to figure out and I should really pick up a book and read about some of the different features =P I may do that at some point.

I'll try and grab some other shots from around the city since I have more time to kill now :)

General Update

Well, haven't I been a bit absent lately! We've moved house and have yet have no internet access, so my presence on the wibblywobbyway has been pretty limited all round. However, in my absence, I have acquired a shiny new camera which is rather wonderful and have found something that I would really quite like to try my hand at.

Firstly, my camera is a bridge camera, in the form of the Panasonic Lumix FZ50. As far as I can tell, it's as good as an SLR with the added bonuses of being cheaper and a bit easier to learn on. It's served me well so far in the short time I've had it and hopefully I'll be improving my skills a bit better now.

Second is an idea that I've had milling around for a while. I've never really thought of photography as a career, more of a hobby, but with judgement day drawing closer and me going to University, talks have come up over what I want to do in the future. Now, doing maths leaves me with very many or very few options, depending on how you look at it. I can go into a multitude of careers involving maths, I can go into any office and hold a good case for employment or I could teach. I like the idea of teaching at the moment and that's what I'm heading for right now. However, whilst we were sat in the park the other day, I spotted a family out with their children and I had a real urge to start snapping. Now, taking pictures of kids probably isn't wise in this day and age but it sparked something. Photographers like Venture specialise in bringing family photos away from the classical posed shot and have some fun and take more characteristic shots. The ones that we had done are nice but they still look a bit posed and show a pretty forced view of our characters. My idea was, if you spent a day with a family in the park/somewhere they know or feel comfortable in, you'd get more characteristic shots that would make for better photos in the end of the day. It's something to think about anyway as I get older and start working properly :)

Thoughts?

Trip to York, 16-06-07

Yesterday, it was the trip to York, arranged by our lovely Mags of the Manchester Phoenix organisation. Originally it was for the races but, since the track was completely waterlogged, it was just a happy shopping trip. This has yielded a fair few photographs that I'm in the process of uploading at the moment. I got quite frustrated during the day because, beautiful city as it is, I found myself completely uninspired and more interested in the home-made ice cream that we found at a little kiosk run by the craziest girls I've ever met. Anyway, although the photos are slightly mediocre, be gentle and enjoy :)

On a different note, over the summer, Matt and I are planning on doing some craft fairs around Manchester to try and make some money out of our pictures. We're only just in the planning stages at the moment but hopefully we'll be able to get a couple in soon to make a bit of money and to start doing something with the quite vast collection of photos we're starting to build up between us.

Reaching Out

Well, AxDude set up his site LitMuse and that got going nicely :)

EternitysEnd and I have set up a sister site dedicated to photography; PhotoMuse. Hopefully some of the people on here will go and take a look. It's for talking about technique, helping out budding photographers and showing off your work if you feel like it :)

Take a look :) we're friendly and the site is a bit quiet at the moment (which is a vast understatement given that there's um... three of us on there so far!! :D)
